Campaigners aim to curb greed at Surin Beach
Beach Local people and environment campaigners met last week to discuss ways to put the brakes on rampant commercialisation of Surin Beach.

The meeting, on March 20, with the umbrella theme of “Love your home town” was spearheaded by Ma’an Samran, the newly elected President of the Cherng Talay Tambon Administration Organisation (OrBorTor), which covers not only Surin but also Bang Tao Beach.

The brainstorming meeting, which lasted from 9 am to 4:15 pm, drew a diverse group of about 40 people, including locals, property people, hotels, traders and eco-campaigners.

All were concerned that a lack of environmental management combined with commercial greed, land encroachment, weak regulations, limited monitoring, a lack of proper zoning and of law enforcement had allowed businesses to flourish without restraint or regard to the environment.
