Phuket 'could lose out to Vietnam, Myanmar'
PHUKET: The island risks losing investment over the next few years to emerging countries such as Vietnam and possibly Myanmar, officials were warned on July 2.

In a meeting chaired by Vice-Governor Dr Sommai Preechasin to discuss the impact of the B300 minimum day wage, the former President of the Phuket Human Resources Management Club, Prasert Monprasit, said that especially in hospitality and property fields, the east coast of Vietnam will increasingly be a target for investment, both Thai and foreign. Evason buyer comes out of the closet
PHUKET: The name of the buyer of the Evason Phuket Resort in Rawai has finally been revealed.

It is, property guru Bill Barnett reports in his thephuketinsider.com blog, a subsidiary of Singapore firm L.C.Development, which paid B1.4 billion for the resort via a Thai affiliate JTM (Thailand). The deal, brokered by Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels, was signed on April 21, and hit the local headlines after many of the staff at the resort were laid off. View more...

Joyce takes on IATA role
Qantas Airways CEO and Managing Director Alan Joyce has become Chairman of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Board of Governors for the coming year.

Joyce succeeds KLM President and CEO Peter Hartman. He remarked, "IATA plays a critical role in the industry and I am honored to take on the role of leading its Board of Governors. "The top priorities, as always, will be safety, security, and sustainability. View more...

Summer Family Festival - Jun 23-Aug 25, 2012

Right through until 25 August, Canal Shopping Village is transformed into a carnival playground, with a Beer Tent for parents to socialise and relax while their youngsters enjoy the Kidzsole Flying Trapeze, bouncy castle, and games in the Kidz Lounge. Festival attractions during the two months include "Art Adventure" art classes with Artists-in-Residence, free Zumba fitness sessions twice a week in Canal Village, entertainment by a strolling troupe of international performers from the famous Palazzo dinner theatre, and theme parties. Oceans Apart by Robin Gillow and Libby Harrison - July 14-17, 2012

Phuket Race Week - July 18-22, 2012

A week of exciting, international-standard yacht racing off Phuket's East Coast. Plenty of social activities throughout the week. Now in its ninth year, the regatta is run over six or seven classes, including cruising/bareboat/charter yachts. It's competitive, high-octane racing for the serious boats and fun courses around the islands for the less serious racers. Dusit Smile Bowling 2012 Charity - July 28, 2012
Location: CS Bowl, Big C Supercentre Phuket

Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket will hold its second bowling tournament, the Dusit Charity Cup 2012, on 28 July 2012 at CS Bowl, Big C Supercentre Phuket. The winning team will be awarded the Governor's Cup trophy inscribed by Phuket Governor Tri Augaradacha. Proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards the ongoing 'Dusit Smiles Operation Smile Thailand' programme. For the Dusit Charity Cup 2012, a registration fee of THB 1,500 per team covers the rental of bowling shoes and refreshments.
