Airport expansion work begins this month
PHUKET: Work will begin this month on the expansion of the Phuket International Airport, almost doubling its passenger capacity from the current official figure of 6.5 million a year to 12.5 million, the Deputy Director of Airports of Thailand (AoT), Wing Commander Prathip Vijitthor, announced on Friday evening (August 31).

A new international passenger terminal is to be built, capable of handling 5 million arrivals and departures a year, while the current terminal building will be for domestic travel only, and will be modified to handle 7.5 million passenger movements. The number of aircraft stands will increase from 15 to 25, with the number of airbridges being increased to 12 from the current seven. The work, costing B5.79 building, will take 31 months to complete ľ until around April 2015. View more...

Starwood to host Koh Siray mini marathon
PHUKET: Starwood hotels and resorts is set to host its inaugural charity mini marathon on Koh Siray (Siray Island) on Sunday 16 September 2012 to raise funds for UNICEF and local Phuket charities such as the Good Shepherd and Koh Siray School.

The Starwood participants are The Naka Island A Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort and The Westin Siray Bay Resort & Spa, Phuket will unite for this inaugural fund raising event. The race is expected to draw in excess of 700 participants from all over Phuket and will kick off on Sunday 16 September at 06:15am. The mini marathon route is 10.5 km in length and will lead participants through the tropical scenic landscapes of Koh Siray while the charity walkers will leisurely stroll a 5 km course. The price for registration for the mini marathon is THB 300 per runner and the charity walk is priced at THB 250 per person. Thai economy posts brisk 2Q growth
Thailand's economy has logged a second straight quarter of solid growth, buoyed by investment to repair factories damaged by last year's devastating floods and strong domestic demand, data showed Monday.

Gross domestic product (GDP) grew 3.3 percent during the April to June period from the previous quarter, when the economy had expanded 11 percent, according to the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB). GDP rose 4.2 percent in the latest quarter compared with a year earlier. The Thai economy has rebounded sharply after suffering a double-digit contraction in the wake of the kingdom's worst floods in decades. View more...

New drive to legalise black taxis
PHUKET: The Provincial Land Transport Office (PLTO) hosted another meeting yesterday (August 27) as part of its repeated attempts to bring order to the chaotic transport scene on Phuket, by converting uncontrolled, illegal "black" taxis into legal "green" taxis that can be controlled through transport regulations.

Teerayut Prasertpol, chief of the Phuket Land Transport Office (PLTO) told the meeting that the aim is to "lead to a better regulated transport system" for the island. The office will accept applications for legalisation from black taxi drivers from tomorrow (August 29) until September 10. After that, the next step will be to consider how to bring unregistered minibuses and motorbike taxis into the fold. View more...

The 'Hungry Ghost' festival is an important merit-making event for the ethnic Chinese. Special food, flowers and candles are offered to ancestors on altars. Other offerings are made to 'feed the ghosts without relatives' that are said to have been released from hell for the month. Experience this beautiful event for yourself at any Chinese Shrine on the island during the festival. Or if you want to enjoy one of the biggest Hungry Ghost celebrations in Phuket head to the fresh market on Ranong Road. The whole market and nearby areas will be colourfully decorated and feature interesting activities from about noon until midnight including the traditional merit-making ceremony, lion dances , magic shows, live concerts, cabaret shows and many more stage shows.
